1 viewA drone strike hit a residential area of Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, on Thursday morning, injuring civilians, including women and children, according to Tigray Television.
The reported attack represents a particularly serious escalation in the deteriorating security situation in northern Ethiopia. It appears to be the first reported drone strike inside the city of Mekelle since the November 2022 Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, which formally ended the two-year war between the Ethiopian federal government and Tigrayan forces.
Tigray Television Reports Civilian Injuries
Tigray Television, the regional state-owned broadcaster, reported that the strike occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. local time on August 20 in the Da’ero area Endamariam of Mekelle.
Translating the broadcaster’s Tigrinya report:
"Today, at around 11:00 a.m., a drone bombardment was carried out on residential homes in the Da’ero area of Mekelle city."
"As a result of fragments from the drone strike, mothers and children who were playing in their neighbourhood were hit and have been taken to hospital."
"Residential houses also sustained both serious and minor damage. Tigray Television visited the area and confirmed the damage at the scene."
The report did not immediately provide the number of people injured or their conditions.
Another strike reportedly occurred around Arid Area, also known as Northern Command.
Strike Comes Just Two Days After Another Reported Drone Attack
Thursday’s reported strike comes amid a rapidly worsening military situation.
On August 18, Tigrayan authorities accused Ethiopia’s federal government of carrying out a drone strike at a farmers’ training centre in Dandera, near Mekelle. Reports about that incident said no casualties occurred.
The latest incident is therefore significant not simply because another drone has reportedly been used, but because the strike reported by Tigray Television occurred inside Mekelle itself and in a residential neighbourhood, with civilians reportedly wounded.
Pretoria Agreement Under Growing Strain
The November 2022 Pretoria agreement brought an end to one of Africa’s deadliest recent conflicts after two years of fighting between Ethiopia’s federal government and Tigrayan forces.
For nearly three years after the agreement, Mekelle was largely spared the drone and aerial attacks that had characterized parts of the 2020-2022 war.
However, the political and military arrangements established under Pretoria have progressively deteriorated.
Tensions intensified during 2025 and 2026 amid disputes over implementation of the agreement, contested territories, the political status of the TPLF and control of Tigray’s regional administration. Ethiopian federal forces reportedly carried out their first post-war drone strike against Tigrayan forces in November 2025, while major clashes between federal and Tigrayan forces were reported in January 2026.
More recently, both sides have reportedly mobilized forces around Tigray borders, raising fears that Ethiopia and Tigray could slide back toward a wider war.
Mekelle’s History Gives the Attack Added Significance
Mekelle carries particular symbolic and humanitarian significance because the city experienced bombardment during the previous Tigray war.
During the federal military campaign in November 2020, artillery struck residential and other civilian areas of the city before federal forces took control of Mekelle. Contemporary accounts documented civilian deaths and injuries during the bombardment.
The Pretoria agreement subsequently created hope that such attacks on Tigray’s capital had ended.
Thursday’s reported drone strike inside a Mekelle residential neighbourhood therefore marks an alarming new stage in the current escalation.
