EU Calls for Immediate De-escalation as Fighting Escalates in Northern Ethiopia

The European Union says it is “deeply concerned” by the rapidly deteriorating situation in northern Ethiopia, citing military activity across several locations, the takeover of the Mekelle, Axum and Shire airports by TPLF forces, and recent drone strikes conducted by the Ethiopian National Defence Force. 

In a statement issued Wednesday, the EU called for immediate de-escalation and urged the parties to recommit to the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, commonly known as the Pretoria Agreement. It said political differences must be resolved through dialogue rather than military action. 

The EU also stressed that protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law are “imperative and non-negotiable,” while condemning strikes affecting humanitarian convoys and any denial of humanitarian access. 

Brussels said it remains committed to supporting de-escalation, African Union-led mediation and meaningful dialogue as tensions in northern Ethiopia continue to rise. ⁠
